Painter Baek Jieun who Wants to Live Beautifully

A girl who likes to play and dress up
When Baek Jieun was young and immature, there was nothing she was scared of. She was always happy. Owing to her great interest in fashion, she loved to decorate herself with shoes and jewelry. Whenever she grabbed people’s attention and got praises related to her appearance, her self-esteem was also increasing.
Even though she felt the bitterness of life by failing in entering the university she desired, she was not that sad because she believed that she could enter the school next year.
Her friend suggested her to go see the sea, and she couldn’t refuse the suggestion. She thought she could concentrate on study more after visiting the sea. But on the way home, she had a car accident. It happened in 1998. Since then, she got a severe disability not to be able to use hands by getting hurt on cervical spine No.7.

She goes to Paris, France.

Before getting injured, she wanted to major in fashion. After using a wheelchair, however, she changed her major to fine art. In 2005 when the Division of Design & Imaging was newly established in Baekseok University, she entered it immediately. For the preparation of college entrance examination, she studied fine art at an academy in front of her house, and she already created many works by attending a studio, so she might decide to go to university to live great.
Her friend who was a vocalist studying abroad in Paris visited Korea for a moment and came to her house.
“If you are a true painter, you should hold an exhibition once in Paris, France. Don’t you think?”
With her friend’s words, Jieun decided to hold an exhibition in Paris.

In 2017, she held her first overseas exhibition, Guilmong(LE CONNETABLE, Paris, France). And the reason why she was able to consecutively hold private exhibitions in Paris, France like Sonated' insomnie(Studio.iam_ist, Paris, France) in 2018, and Température(L' IME ART, Paris, France) in 2019, was that she was invited by gallery people who viewed her first exhibition. As she was also invited for special exhibitions by France, Germany, and New York of the United States, she was spending busy days on the preparation for domestic & overseas exhibitions.

Challenge for change

The works by Baek Jieun were used for MBN drama in 2022 and MBC drama in 2023 as sponsorship.
As she could not hold exhibitions because of the COVID-19, she reserved a 60 pyeong-large gallery to hold a private exhibition in October, 2023. She will exhibit all the works she completed so far. And she also aims to hold overseas exhibitions in 2024.
In 2023, she applied for the Won Lee Awards. Because the winner was only one person, she didn’t expect too much by saying that ‘it is significant to participate in it’. When she heard that she really won the award, she could not believe it.

“When all the activities were halted because of the COVID-19, my identity as a painter was gradually reducing. I was studying the new direction of my works by looking back on any possible problems with my works. But it didn’t help me to get my confidence back. The prize-winning experience in the Won Lee Awards gave me confidence in myself. Now, I can perform my work based on confidence in myself. In the future, I will continuously work hard to become an honorable painter as the prize winner of the Won Lee Awards.”
