Gayageum Player Kim Bo-kyeong, Capturing Light in Her Fingertips
Kim Bo-kyeong
Born completely blind, Kim Bo-kyeong underwent a corneal transplant surgery at 7 months old. She currently has partial vision in her right eye but may lose it at any time. She started learning the violin in the fifth grade but was captivated by the gayageum when she heard it. She chose the gayageum over the violin in the second year of middle school.
After learning for about a year, she entered the National High School of Traditional Korean Arts as the first disabled student in 2015. In 2018, she entered Department of Korean Music in Seoul National University as the first disabled student there as well, gaining a lot of attention. However, she faced many difficulties throughout her education, because she was the first disabled student in both high school and university.
Since her university years, she has been actively involved in domestic and international performances, continuing a wide range of artistic activities. In 2024, she received the Special Jury Award at the 2nd Seoul Arts Awards hosted by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture.
